Frequently Asked Questions

What Is Access Code?

Access Code is a blended approach to reading intervention designed for students who are struggling with reading fluency and comprehension because they lack automatic word/phrase recognition skills.

Why is Access Code Needed?

15 - 20% of all students struggle with foundational phonics and word recognition skills. Some educators have indicated that in their schools this rate is above 60%. These students have "holes" in their understanding of the system of phonics rules that impede automatic word recognition, fluency and comprehension. If you have students who persistently struggle with word recognition, Access Code might be just what they need.

What Makes Access Code Different?

Traditional methods for reading intervention focus on helping students acquire basic skills. It is assumed that once acquired students are able to transfer the rules to new words and connected text. Unfortunately, these methods do not work for many students.

Access Code is driven by a learning model, the Varied Practice Model, which is proven to go beyond acquisition to ensure that students are able to retain, apply, and generalize skills. The ability to apply and generalize foundational reading skills allows students to develop automaticity, leading to increased fluency and comprehension. Access Code is the only reading intervention to utilize this learning model.

Is Access Code Easy to Implement?

Access Code is easy to implement. Students should use the online student component 15 - 20 minutes per day for four - five days each week. Teachers have access to additional resources to provide students practice with connected text, as well as deepen and extend learning to other areas of literacy such as writing, spelling, and comprehension. Teachers are informed about student progress so that they may provide additional instruction if desired.
